Jesus for the First Time Before Pilate

Jesus for the First Time Before Pilate

In portraying the first meeting of Christ with Pilate, Tissot gives us Pilate the worldly politician faced with someone he cannot understand. The contrast could not be stronger: Christ unencumbered by earthly possessions, in the halls of wealth and power.

11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied.

12When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.

13Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?" 14But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
