Jesus Appears to His Disciples in Jerusalem
Sunset over Jerusalem from Mt of Olives
Jerusalem of Gold is especially picturesque at sunset. Today Jerusalem spreads far beyond its ancient borders, which used to be defined by the valleys around Jerusalem. Visible in the foreground is the Kidron Valley, which until today is the eastern border of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, which sits just above it.
19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."
44He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."
45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
